The Dacian army was a strong military force but it wasn’t as big as the
Roman army, never numbering more than 50.000 soldiers. The
army was made up of cavalry who fought with bows and foot soldiers who were armed
with curved swords (sicae) and straight swords (falces). Their flag
emblem was of a well-known dragon called draco.
The army used the natural environment (i.e. mountains and valleys) to
their advantage when building their
fortification systems, especially the ones
close to the Dacian capital.
Decebalus tried to
establish an anti-Roman system of alliances with his neighbours the
Bastarns and Sarmats and also with the Parthian kingdom by sending an
ambassador to the Parthian king, Parcorus II, before the second war with
the Romans. |
